Hardwood floors provide a warmth and beauty to a home that is unrivalled by any other flooring option. There are many other benefits of hardwood floors as well, such as the value they add to your home, easy care and cleaning, great style coupled with durability and as always, they're natural and safe for the environment. Like any other natural material, wood requires regular care and maintenance to keep it looking good for a lifetime.
The Woodoc Way
Woodoc 25 Polyurethane Floor Sealer is the ultimate treatment for wooden floors. It deep penetrates to nourish and enhance the grain of the wood, while providing a tough, flexible surface that can withstand everyday use. Floors sealed and finished with Woodoc 25 are easy to maintain and have a long lasting, warm glow.
1. Prepare the floor
The secret of an excellent finish lies in the preparation of the surface of the wood before applying the sealer. The better the preparation, the better the finish.
• For the best end result Woodoc 25 must be applied to smooth, bare wood.
• First remove old polish, oil and loose particles by scrubbing the floor well with Woodoc Steel Wool and mineral turpentine.
• Always work with the grain of the wood.
• Remove any old sealer / varnish by sanding the floor surface with a floor sander, which can be hired from most equipment hire centres. Remember you will also need sanding belts for the job.
Safety Tip:
Before using a sander, make sure that any nails are firmly seated in the wood. Use a nail punch to tap down any nail heads that sit above the surface so they sit flush.
2. Cleaning the floor
• The floor must be dust free before the sealer is applied.
• After sanding, vacuum thoroughly to get rid of all dust.
• If necessary, wipe down the floor with a cloth dampened with mineral turpentine.
• Never wash or wipe the floor with water before application of the sealer. The wood must be completely dry for the next step.
3. Sealing the floor
Seal the floor with deep penetrating Woodoc 25 Polyurethane Floor Sealer, available in either Satin or Matt finish. Full application instructions are on the label.
For the very best results it is recommended that the sealer be applied with a large, long hair brush.
• Always work with the grain of the wood.
• The first coat is the most important as it is the coat that deep penetrates the wood and bonds with it, forming the foundation for the following coats. Apply the product liberally, making sure that the surface stays evenly wet for at least 10 minutes. Work slowly across the floor so that areas which dry quickly can be wetted again.
• Allow the first coat to dry completely and rub down lightly with Woodoc SteelWool.
• For the second coat, make sure that the coat is evenly wet as you progress. Allow to dry and rub down lightly with Woodoc SteelWool.
• The third coat is applied in the same way as the second coat and allowed to dry.
• Allow at least 48 hours before introducing furniture to the surface.
DIY Tip:
Plan your work so that you don't "paint yourself into a corner". Always start at the corners furthest from the door and work towards it. |
