Essential toolkit

Okay girls, if we're going to be 'doing it for ourselves' we need to get kitted out correctly. And no self respecting DIY Diva can be without an Essential Toolkit.

Your toolkit should have all the tools needed to perform routine maintenance in and around the home, as well as the basics to get you going with our DIY Diva projects. Here's our recommended essentials:

- Tape measure - 3m
- Claw hammer - also great for removing nails
- Insulated pliers
- Set of screwdrivers
- Hacksaw
- Stanley knife
- Spirit level
- Small adjustable spanner
- Large adjustable spanner
- Insulation tape
- Wrench
- Safety masks and gloves
Optional
- Cordless screwdriver
- Cordless drill
- Jigsaw

Bits and Bobs
In addition to the tools, don't forget to include useful "bits and bobs" that you will need - screws, picture hooks, nails, sandpaper, protective goggles (especially important for use with power tools), gloves, pencils, insulating tape and adhesives. Buy a separate sectioned storage box so that these small items can be located easily.

DIP Tips:
When buying tools for your Essential Toolkit, don't opt for cheaper tools. A decent set of quality tools will last a lifetime.

As screws come in many different sizes and shapes, it makes sense to invest in a set of screwdrivers that will meet several requirements. Some sets have one handle with interchangeable heads - with standard and Philips (cross) heads. My personal favourite is a cordless screwdriver - less hard work and easy to use anywhere!

Get yourself organised right from the start with a collapsing toolbox, or at least a toolbox with divisions. In an emergency, the last thing you need is to have to pull out all the tools to find the one you want.

I personally choose Bosch power tools. Why? The units are lightweight and easy to handle. On top of that, the tools can be used for longer periods between charging. Something I found lacking in other tools that I have tried. The Bosch Cordless Drill has an easy drill bit changing chuck, and you don't have to worry about losing that small fidgety key! Whilst slightly more expensive, I always say that you get what you pay for, and Bosch power tools certainly give you value for money.
