Install Drywalling

Drywall offers homeowners an easy way to add interior walls. It is fire resistant, eco-friendly, and offers thermal insulation and sound proofing properties.

1. Measure and mark the position on the floor and walls where the dry wall/s) will be placed. Be sure to work at right angles to any existing walls.

DIY Tip:
A chalk line can be used to mark out longer lines.

2. Measure and mark the lengths of floor track you will require, according to your plan. Cut these lengths using tin snips.

3. Fix the floor track sections to the floor. Use a 5mm steel drill bit to drill through the track and then a 5mm masonry drill bit to drill into the floor. Space these about 400mm apart. Hammer 5mm Hilti wall anchors into the tracks to fix them in position.

4. Attach the track section/s) to the wall/s) and ceiling in the same manner as the floor tracks. Use a spirit level to make sure that the wall tracks are perpendicular to the ceiling and floor track/s).

5. Construct the remaining framework by joining the corners using pop rivets. First drill 3mm holes for the pop rivets and then fix the rivets in place using a pop rivet gun. Important: Check that the framework is straight and true, as it is easier to rectify any problems before you pop rivet the joints.

6. Simply twist vertical stud sections in place along a track with their centres 400mm apart. As this project was only the length of a doorway we only needed one stud section, which we centred within this doorway space. It is only necessary to fix the corner joints with pop rivets but not the in-between stud sections, as the panels (once fixed to the framework) will give the structure lateral strength.

Cut the required sections of 12.5mm Rhinoboard using a steel ruler and a carpet knife: cut lightly along the cutting line you have drawn and then turn the board upright and ‘fold’ it – it will ‘crack’ along the cut line. Simply cut from the back along the fold.

7. Screw the Rhinoboard to the framework using dry-wall studs. Make sure that the boards are raised about 12mm off the floor. Complete the wall by fixing boards to the other side of the framework. Screw the dry-wall studs just below the surface so that these can easily be patched later.

8. Place Rhinotape over all the joints. Fill all the joints with Rhinoglide, which should be mixed to a smooth paste (be sure to follow the mixing instructions on the packaging). Use a crisscross action to cover the dry-wall studs. 9. Lightly sand all the joints (once these are dry) and finish the wall in your preferred manner (tiles, paint or wallpaper).
