How to fit a curtain rod or rail

If you need to hang or install a curtain rod or rail there are a few basics you need to know before you start drilling into walls.

First and foremost, you need a powerful drill to drill the holes for hanging the rail. You also need Fischer wall plugs and screws. We recommend Fischer because they are made of nylon - not plastic - and are far stronger.

HERE'S HOW:

1. Make a mark above the window recess for the required height of the rod. This will depend on curtain length and aesthetic preference. Hanging the rod close to the ceiling line can make a room look taller

2. Use the height mark to draw a level guide line above the recess; this should extend slightly beyond the recess width           on each side.

3. Use a spirit level to make a mark on the horizontal line directly above the corner of the recess.

4. Measure back to mark the position of the brackets. This distance will depend on the width of the gathered curtain.

5. Position the end support on the mark and use a pencil to mark off attachment holes. Remove the end support.

6. Use Fischer wall plugs and screws to support the curtain rod. You need to drill the holes to the same diameter as the wall plugs - but slightly longer. Use a masonry bit to do this.

7. Push in the wall plugs, place the end supports in position and screw in place.

8. Cut the rod to length if necessary with a jigsaw and clean cut blade. It should extend on each side of the end support brackets to accommodate end rings and finials. With supports in place, thread the rod through one end support. Position rings on the rod before threading the other end of the rod through the other end support.
