Replacing a ceiling

I recently had a small leak in the roof, which resulted in damage to the plasterboard ceiling. If you need to replace a ceiling, here's how...

Removing the existing cornice
Carefully score along the bottom edge of the existing cornice with a palette knife.

Remove the cornice by levering it away from the wall where the wall joins the ceiling, taking care not to damage the wall surface.

Preparation
Locate the centre points of the existing ceiling joists by probing with a screwdriver.

Support and re-nail any badly sagging parts of the ceiling.

Fixing battens
Attach new battens at right angles to existing ceiling joists.

Fix battens to each joist with flathead nails or appropriately sized nails to suit batten type and ceiling construction.

Space battens at 450mm maximum centres when using 10mm plasterboard.

Positioning plasterboard
Position the sheets across the battens. It is recommended that you use full size sheets to avoid complex joints.

Two people will be needed to lift the plasterboard sheets into position.

Fixing plasterboard into position
Fasten the sheets to the battens with plasterboard screws spaced ever 30mm. For wide sheets (1350mm) use a minimum of 6 screws.

Always screw from the centre of the sheet towards the outside edge.

When screwing, ensure that the screw heads are driven just below the plasterboard surface without breaking the paper face.

Finishing
Finish any joints with paper jointing tape and then apply finishing plaster.

Fix new lengths of cornice around the perimeter of the room.
