Easy carpet repair

Don't allow a burn hole or torn section of carpeting to send you running to the store for a whole new carpet. Use this simple cut-and-replace technique to make your carpet as good as new.

1. Cutting out the damaged section
Put a template of approximately the same size over damaged area. This can be a clean can lid or other template. Leave the heads of the nails projecting to make it easy to remove the template once you have finished cutting out.

2. Create new patch
Using the lid or template as a guide, cut out a new section of carpet with a sharp utility knife. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for the matching patch.

3. Adhere edges
Vacuum up loose fibres. Slip double-faced carpet tape halfway under carpet edges and apply seam cement to edges.

4. Put new patch in place
Press the patch into place. Weight the patch overnight with a book or board and a heavy object.

DIY Tips:
Remove a suitable piece of carpet from a built-in closet, where no one will be any the wiser.

When inserting the new patch, ensure that you lay the new piece in the same direction as the existing carpet and/or pattern.
