Adding Interest Areas

Alcove shelving can be put to practical or decorative use. Here, painted shelves form a focal point in the room for the display of wooden boxes and wicker baskets.

Add interest to walls with alcove shelving

Here's how:
1. Decide on the shelf position, then use a level to mark the position of the first shelf support on one alcove wall.

2. Drill clearance and countersink holes in the supports, and use the first one to mark the fixing hole positions on the wall. Drill the holes and fix this support.

3. Rest a shelf on the first support, get it level and mark the shelf position on the opposite wall of the alcove. The prepare the second shelf support.

4. Screw the second support in place after using it as in step 2 to mark the position of the fixing holes on the wall. Check again that it is level.

5. Mark up a set of pinch rods from scrap wood, held together as shown right with a rubber band. Extend the rods to span the rear wall of the alcove.

6. Lift the rods out carefully without disturbing their positions and lay them on the rear edge of the shelf. Mark the width of the alcove on the shelf.

7. Repeat the operation in step 5 to measure the width at the point where the front edge of the shelf will be, then transfer the measurements to the shelf.

8. Cut the shelf to width and lay it on the supports. If the fit is poor against the back wall, use a block and pencil to scribe the wall outline on it.

9. Saw carefully along the scribed line with a jigsaw. Sand the cut edge smooth and then fit the shelf back in position.
