The jigsaw has to be one of my favourite power tools to use. Why? Because a jigsaw is a versatile tool that can be used in so many ways for all types of projects in and around the home. Plus, while you can have all your timber and board products cut to size at Builders, they only cut squares and rectangles, leaving anything else up to you. Not only does a jigsaw cut timber and board products, it can also cut steel, plastic, PVC, acrylic, sheet metal, aluminium, and more. Below you will find practical information that explains how to use a jigsaw properly and for more than just cutting wood.

Safety First

Your safety should never be ignored when working with any power tool and this is paramount when working with a jigsaw. While ear protection is not a must, if you plan on using noisy tools for a prolonged duration, you should at least wear ear protectors.

Before you start using your new jigsaw, acquaint yourself with how to change the jigsaw blades

Clamps are essential when using a jigsaw as they prevent the work piece from moving around while you cut. To support the work piece, you will also need an adjustable bench or saw horse that allows plenty of space underneath the jigsaw blade where you will be cutting.

Workshop Environment

While your safety is a main priority, so too is how you set up your workspace. Jigsaws make a mess so make sure that you put down a drop cloth if using the tool indoors or get yourself a dust extraction system.

Even if you do not have a dedicated workshop, you can still use power tools if you invest in a quality dust-extraction system.

Tool Knowledge

Everyone using power tools should acquaint themselves with the tool. Read through the Instruction Manual, visit the brand website if they offer any advice or tips on using the tool, and understand how the tool works. Once you have this basic knowledge you will know what you can and cannot do with the tool and how to adjust or change accessories with ease.

Using Your Jigsaw

When you first purchase your jigsaw, take the time to read the Instruction Manual. Not only will this inform you on how to use the jigsaw properly but it will also explain in detail the various features that your model of jigsaw might have. Not all jigsaws are the same and not all offer the same features and benefits. For example, I have used a Bosch jigsaw for over 20 years and, even though I have tried various other brands, none offer low vibration, ease of use, and safety features.
