When using a router, rip-out occurs on the corners and can spoil your project. The easiest way to avoid rip-out is to route the edge grain on your project before doing the sides.

ABOVE: Route the edge grain first and then route the sides. 

ABOVE and BELOW: Sometimes you only get a small rip-out when routing the edge grain, but this is easily repaired when routing the sides.
