Easy ways to transform a pine dresser

Make your own or buy a ready-made chest of drawers, there are so many ways to turn the humble, pine chest of drawers into a spectacular feature piece.

A contrast in finishes: the frame is prepared with wood primer and painted in white with Woodoc Gel Stain in Mahogany applied to the drawer fronts and sealed with Woodoc 5 matt sealer. Then all you need at 4 decorative legs that you will find at your local Builders or www.Gelmar.co.za.

Both above transformations turn a plain chest of drawers into modern pieces that will add beautiful storage to any home. As an alternative to the first look, stain the frame and paint the drawer fronts. And then add modern legs and your choice of handles.

Create your own faux vintage apothecary cabinet by gluing 3mm thick panels onto the drawer fronts and then fitting aged brass or pewter cup handles. Stain with Woodoc Gel Stain and finish with Woodoc 5 matt sealer. Pop on some caster wheels and you're done. If you wish, you can add a thicker top to the dresser using 32mm x 67mm or 94mm pine that you will find at your local Builders Warehouse.

This is a similar modifications as the previous design, but in this one thin panels are placed horizontally onto the drawer fronts. Paint the entire cabinet with Rust-Oleum Chalked ultra matte paint in Country Grey and finish off with a coat of clear sealer or Woodoc Antique Wax. You will find both products at your local Builders Warehouse.

Masking tape and white acrylic PVA in matt add a trendy geometric design to these pine chest of drawers. After painting, you can leave natural or apply Woodoc Gel Stain in your choice of wood tint and then add a couple of coats of Prominent Paints clear acrylic sealer to protect and keep clean.

Have fun with paint and designs to dress up a plain, pine chest of drawers to fit in with a particular room design or theme. Rust-Oleum offer a wide range of colourful paints, satin, gloss and metallics, that can be used in so many ways.

Double up on storage by joining two pine dressers together and mounting onto a single piece of board. Paint the entire cabinet with Prominent Paints Select Sheen in your choice of colour. Add new hardware with modern brushed chrome legs and handles.

Sometimes all it takes is a coat or two of paint, new handles, and adding brass corners onto drawer fronts. If you are unable to find brass corners, use steel corners and apply a coat of Rust-Oleum brass spray paint.
