A Dining Room that sizzles!

Homeowners Diana Coopersmith and Thomas Plason are sick of their boring dining room. They've found a look straight from the pages of a magazine by that captivates the elegant, festive style they're looking for.

The pedestal table in the room was made from one 2 metre-long plank of wood, whilst the benches were purchased from a discount pine store. With a little sanding and varnish, the tabletop was given a high, glossy shiny. Two concrete stands were used for the pedestals. Two red velvet upholstered chairs were found at a auction.

The four cushions in the inspiration room were sewed using a combination of silk, chenille and a cotton blend. A 50mm piece of foam was inserted inside each cover and then a string of pretty green and gold beads were fastened onto the corners of the cushions.

Design Tip:
If using chenille for upholstery, make sure to buy an upholstery grade, rather then one used for clothing. Clothing-grade chenille tends to stretch, and if used on cushions, it will often lose its shape.

In the centre of the dining table sits a wrought-iron candelabra with reflective beads strung on wire, then hung on the candelabras for a elegant touch.

Design Tip:
When choosing beads for a decoration, it is imperative to think about scale. You don't want beads that are too large because they might look a little gaudy, but you also don't want beads that are too small because they might just disappear. When beading, be sure to use wire or upholstery thread, as thin string will not hold up.

The homeowner's original side table was sanded to clear up some blemishes and water rings and then a couple coats of stain were applied to finish off the look.

Deep-red champagne flutes, goblets and water glasses set the table with a dramatic tone. A silky tomato-red table runner covers the centre, and sunny striped place mats mark each setting. Sparkling orbs are scattered across the table for a finishing touch.
