Updated Contemporary

Homeowners Kim Matt Peake love their modern home. They are ready, though, for a dining room that blends their contemporary style with the room's classic elements. The design of the room is based around the modern glass and two-toned wood dining table. The result: a warm, updated style that features matching chairs, a favourite photos display and even a table lamp turned chandelier.

Combining the homeowners' modern tastes with the clean, classic lines of the dining room makes for a singular room that represents both styles. The room is pulled together with a traditional colour palate of green, tan and white. The clutter is cleared and the selection of wall hangings minimised.

The built-ins are a great feature in the room. However, the white-on-red colour scheme accentuates the angles of the cabinets and makes them stand out too much. It also doesn't help that they are buried under numerous knick-knacks. The windows let in a lot of light but reinforce the stark, angular feel of the space.

Painting the built-ins to match the wall colour helps them blend into the room. The photo display is framed and mounted to the wall to open up the shelving and clean up the look of the space. The faux Roman shades soften the windows. They are hung with double-sided Velcro, a quick trick for hanging curtains without rods.

A circle was painted on the ceiling with the same tan as the walls, but with a metallic tint for a more modern feel. The circle gives the effect of a recessed alcove above the dining table and mimics the shape of its central glass circle. The bigger the circle, the larger the room feels; the circle reaches just short of the edging on the ceiling. The edge is painted the same green as the walls. A repetition of rounded shapes softens the angular architecture.
