You will need:
Acrylic PVA in 3 colours, ranging from dark to light
Sea sponge or synthetic sponge (as used for crafts)
Paint tray
Newspaper
Here's how:
1. Apply the base coat of desired background colour to clean, prepared surfaces; allow to dry.
2. Rinse sponge in water to soften it; squeeze dry. Pour a small amount of first paint colour into the paint tray; tilt toward top of tray.
3. Dab the sponge into paint, taking care not to overload it. then blot sponge on newspaper until you get a light impression.
4. Press the sponge gently onto the wall surface, using a quick, light touch; do not drag sponge across surface. Change position of sponge often for irregular impressions. You can apply more paint to sponge, as necessary, continuing to blot on newspaper before applying to the surface.
5. Continue to apply the first colour to the entire project until individual sponge marks cannot be seen. Stand back frequently to examine the work; fill in areas as necessary. If using more than one colour, apply the first colour sparingly.
6. Allow first colour of paint to dry.
7. Rinse sponge and paint tray. Repeat steps for each colour of paint desired. Apply the last colour, filling in between previous sponge marks to blend colours.
You can experiment with this technique with as many colours and combinations as you want. Use a light background colour and darker layers, or a dark background, dark layers and a final light layer.
