You will need
- Roller and paint tray
- Disposable latex gloves
- Lint-free cotton rags
- Masking tape
- Plastic bucket
- Drop cloth
- Practice board
- Acrylic paint
- Scumble glaze
Here's How:
1. Mask ceilings, baseboards, and trim with masking tape. Paint the wall with your desired basecoat colour and allow to dry completely overnight.
2. Prepare your glaze mixture (one part paint to five parts scumble) in a plastic bucket. Soak a damp cotton rag with your glaze mixture and blot out the excess. (The less you blot out, the bolder your effect will be.) Pour glaze mixture into a paint tray or plastic liner for easier dipping.
3. Practice shaping your rag until you achieve the desired pattern. Lightly dab it repeatedly on the wall, working in a small square area. Reshape the rag often to produce varied textures, and reload the rag when dry. Overlap each impression, and rotate your hand at the wrist for a seamless look.
4. Continue working over the area to achieve a soft effect.
Design Tips:
If an area becomes blotchy, allow the glaze to dry. Then, dip a clean rag in your base colour and use the same dabbing technique to repair your wall.
For a different effect, try ragging off your glaze coat. Roll on a solid 1 m x 1 m section of glaze. Then dab with a damp rag to remove portions of the glaze and reveal your base coat colour. Be sure to rinse out your rag often.
Experiment with other materials to produce a unique look. Instead of using cotton rags for your ragging project, try plastic wrap, burlap, or brown paper bags. |
