Checkerboard Walls

Use high-gloss polyurethane varnish to create a checkerboard pattern on flat walls. Positioned behind wall mounted lights, this effect can be quite dramatic.

You will need:
- Acrylic paint, matt finish
- Masking tape
- Paint brush
- Roller and tray
- Measuring tape
- Water-based Polyurethane [gloss]

Here's how:
1. Base coat the walls using matt acrylic wall paint in desired choice of colour. We chose a light gold colour.

2. Find the centre of the wall from side to side and make a mark from floor to ceiling. Find the centre of the wall from top to bottom and mark the line from side to side.

3. Starting at the centre of the wall, measure 30 x 30 cm squares and draw a grid. Be sure to start in the centre of the wall and when you reach the corners of the wall, the measurement may be less but will be symmetrical. Tape off every other square using masking tape.

4. Using gloss polyurethane, roll into the open squares. Let dry.

5. Remove the tape. Touch up any areas as necessary.
