Transform pine furniture with paint

Pine furniture is reasonably inexpensive if you buy it raw, and you can use paint, wallpaper and other materials to give it almost any look. Give pine furniture rustic appeal or a luxe glamour.

Whether you make your own pine chest of drawers, or buy a ready-made piece, it's easy to turn affordable pine furniture into wonderful pieces for a home. Plus, you can choose your own paint colours, or add finishing touches that complement your style of decor. In this feature we take an ordinary pine chest of drawers and use a variety of paint techniques and materials to show you how easy it is to turn ordinary into extraordinary.

You will want to use a paint that is tough and scrubbable, such as Prominent's Select Sheen and have this mixed to your colour requirements. You'll also need a can of Prominent Wood Primer to prevent any bleed-through.

Pretty in Pink

Raw pine furniture is the ideal blank slate for paint. In this project a pine chest of drawers was given a makeover to turn it into the perfect storage piece for a little girl's bedroom. Shades of pink with an ombre effect from pale pink at the top, to magenta at the bottom, give this chest of drawers girly sophistication. Finish off with diamante knobs from www.gelmar.co.za at around R35 each.

Pop into your nearest paint store to select colour swatches for your painting project. Choose colours that complement the existing decor in a room - or match to a feature in the room, such as a patterned wallpaper, artwork, or colourful rug.

Elegant in Gold

You don't need to spend a fortune on statement pieces - just add paint! A pine chest of drawers painted white takes on elegant lines with the addition of moulding and handles painted with gold. Prime and paint the dresser and then add a dash of Rust-Oleum Universal in metallic gold to accessories, before adding these to your chest of drawers.

Graphic in Grey

Shades of grey look wonderful on this pine chest of drawers for a laundry room. This is also a style that would look great in a boy's bedroom. Use stencils to adding letters or numbers to the drawer fronts and then add cup handles, or your choice of handles or knobs, to finish off.

Perfectly Polished

With a coat or two of paint and some new knobs, a plain pine chest of drawers can be a feature piece for any room. This pine dresser is painted in a navy paint that complements the patterned wallpaper. Some leftover wallpaper was also used to line the drawers for an unexpected touch.
