A Touch of the Tuscan

The rich, earthy colours of Tuscanny reflect a passion for incorporating the outdoors within the confines of living spaces.

No matter how relaxed your style, carpeting adds that extra touch, that feeling of comfort.

Elements of decorating with Tuscanny in mind:

Colour and texture
Warmth and intensity fills the vivid colour palette of this style. The natural hues range from blistering yellow to the concentrated gold's, russet and browns and terracotta.

Other earth tones are blended in Tuscan style decorating. These include expressions of coal black, deep blue, and olive with hints of sea green in combination with generous amounts of rusty reds for added spice.

Natural materials and textures include wood, tile (colorful ceramics and mosaic for wall accents) natural stone for flooring and unpolished metals such as wrought iron, copper, tin, or pewter.

Accessories
What could be simpler than lining a sunny windowsill with some pretty little terracotta pots with Italian herbs (oregano, basil, sage, etc.)? Do you have a section of old wrought iron railing that once graced your front porch? Bring it in, clean it up and get creative. Maybe you could use it for a pot hanger in the kitchen or hang it on the wall for a decorative accent in the family room.

Paint techniques
There are several paint techniques that can be used when creating a Tuscan style:

Sponging is effective and extremely versatile. It gives an all-over, random pattern that can be subtle or bold.

Add architectural interest to an unadorned wall with faux stones that look like the real thing.

Perhaps the most popular faux finish, colour washing is also one of the easiest. It creates the illusion of faded plaster walls and adds depth and texture to the walls. It can be used on any surface walls but is also ideal to cover any minor imperfections in your walls.

Decorative Accessories
Decorative items are a simple way to spice up any room. You probably already have some Tuscan influences in your home:

Wrought iron brackets
Terra cotta planters and pots
Fruit-themed artwork and fabrics
Bright, colourful ceramics & pottery

The idea is to create a warm, comfortable 'lived in' look.

Luxurious textures, rich colours; reminiscent of the warm style of Tuscany.

Natural materials are widely used in Tuscanny; natural stone floors and tiles and earthy-coloured paints.
No fluorescent lights here. Lighting is soft and subtle, glass shades, wrought iron and candles.
