Recover a lampshade

You can't always afford to buy new lamps when you redecorate your home, but you can recover a dated lampshade.

This first article offers instructions on how to recover a basic shade - without replacing the fabric. This method involves the use of spray-on adhesive to cover the existing fabric.

You will need:
- Brown paper, large piece or roll
- Fabric and trim
- Hot-glue gun
- Medium black marker pen
- Spray-on adhesive

Here's how:
1. Remove the lampshade and position - seam down - on the brown paper.

2. Hold the marker pen at the top edge of the shade and begin carefully rolling the shade on the brown paper. Don't lift the pen, keep the point on the paper so that it makes a continuous, solid line as you roll the shade around. Repeat this process for the bottom of the shade, starting at the same point (the seam).

3. Draw a straight line to connect the bottom and top lines at the starting point (the seam).

4. Trace this outline onto your fabric and cut out with sharp scissors.

5. Spray the reverse side of the fabric with spray-on adhesive and carefully position the fabric - starting at the seam - around the shade.

6. Attach your choice of top and bottom trim with a hot-glue gun.
