Curtains can instantly turn any room from blah to beautiful and it's all a matter of hanging them right. You can use curtains to give a room the illusion of height, or visually make a room feel wider. But more than that, curtains can also be used to add colour, texture and pattern to a room - and you don't have to be an interior designer to understand how to hang curtains.

Measure Up

Start off by taking measurements to determine the size of your window to shop for rods or rails and curtains. You can make this project so much easier; take your measurements along to Finishing Touches and let their experts work out exactly what you need to dress your windows. Their range of made to measure curtains covers Eyelet, Pencil, Double Pink and Wave headers.

Finishing Touches will also be able to offer advice on different fabrics and custom drops - for where you want to mount the rod or rail higher. This is important to note, since standard curtain drops come in various lengths and widths and anything over and above this will need to be made to measure, especially if you want curtain drops to pool on the floor, like the window treatment shown below.

GOOD TO KNOW: The standard is to hang the rod on the wall above the window and outside any frame or moulding around the window.

Once you have decided on the exact height and width you want for your curtains, grab a tape measure, pencil and notepad to jot everything down. With these measurements in hand you can shop for rod and rails, and have custom curtains made, or look at your choices for ready made curtains.

Select curtains that complement the style of a particular room, or use window treatments to add dramatic details to a room setting. The right curtains can make any room look even more stunning and add a much-needed finishing touch.
