Suburban apartment goes city chic
A renovation redistributes existing spaces to take advantage of stunning city views.
The apartment, by YLAB Architects, is designed to allow maximum light into the open spaces, and the living room, kitchen and studio are aligned along one side, fronted by large, expansive windows. In this way, the balcony and windows connect the home with its environment become the central elements in this project.
Materials and finishings throughout provide a contrast between white, warm oak and graphite. White walls and trim and graphite elements are warmed by the use of oak wood finish of the laminate flooring and wall cladding (in the kitchen and bedroom).
Floor-to-ceiling windows wrap the front of the apartment and are wrapped with a graphite frame. Designed to hide indirect lighting, and complemented with a graphite roller blind, the colour ties in with hues in the kitchen and bathroom, to create a cohesive theme throughout.
The living room is separated from the kitchen by a central, floor-to-ceiling cupboard finished in white, that contains the audio-visual system and provides essential - discreet - storage.
The custom cabinetry in the kitchen takes its cues from the white wall cladding in the hallway. The hallway wraps around a corner and separates the open spaces.
Glossy white cabinets contrast with black countertops and offer clean lines, and wood accessories add texture and warmth.
An integral part of the home, the studio connets to the living room via a sliding door. All the custom furniture in the home, including desk and shelves, is finished in a white lacquer.
In the master bedroom, the bed is framed with a built-in black lacquered bed support and bedside cabinets, while oak cladding on the wall above the bed adds warmth to the space.
To tie in with the rest of the apartment, the bathroom features grey porcelain tiles with white lacquer fittings and warm, wood accents. A long built-in vanity with mirror provide ample storage.
The balcony reflects the colours and style of the interior living spaces and is decorated in hues of graphite and grey, with a few warming accents. The upholstered seating, the low solid wood table and the brass lamp soften the setting.
