Casual decorating is a more sophisticated take on beach home decor and offers an elegant, yet relaxed style of living for homeowners trying to add a splash of nautical to their decor.
Whether your style preference is for rormal or casual, urban or country - your home should feel comfortable and design plays a big part in that. Good design is not an exact re-creation of a magazine photo - your home should be made up of what is important to you; your collections, family photos, old furniture with a history, reminders of travels or summer holidays, sailing trophies - those are the design elements which make your homes comfortable and unique.
Accessories complete the look
Trim accessories such as mirrors, lamps and boxes with shells - an easy project if you’re handy with a hot-glue gun. Shells and coral gathered from a nearby beach are decorative when displayed on the coffee table or in silver trophy cups and glass urns on end tables, bureaus, and bookcases.
Decor Tips:
A quick and easy way to add trim to home accessories is with a hot glue gun, or with tile adhesive.
The process is very simple: Choose a nice collection of shells, it doesn't matter if they are a little bit chipped at the edges, as this adds to the look. If you are going to be using a hot glue gun, apply a bead of glue to the edges of the shell and carefully and quickly attach these to the surface of the object that you are decorating.
If you are using tile adhesive, cover the object with a fairly thick layer, press in the shells and leave this to dry overnight. To finish off the project; coat the exterior with one or two coats of water-based glaze - gloss.
• Look for accent pillows that take a classic, elegant approach to sea-theme design.
Create the look
• Take your inspiration from nature to create a home that offers natural style designed to celebrate the unadorned beauty of the outside world. Mix rattan and seagrass with timeless textures like linen and jute, or simply bring a bit of the outdoors inside with botanically inspired prints or a handwoven rug. The natural world has immense power to both calm and inspire. Use it to create a home you love.
• A dramatic grouping of art grabs the eye and transforms the seating area into a focal point.
• Add a sensuous touch with a chenille throw, for example, that lends depth to the sofa, and, at the same time, makes a great blanket for snuggling. Or perhaps a plush blue area rug to conjure sea thoughts, and adds polish while pampering the feet.
• Add finishing touches with small seashells rimmed in sterling silver for a casual arrangement with an elegant touch.
• For a nautical look, tailored canvas slipcovers, grommeted curtains, and striped pillows.
