You will need:
- Fabric for main swag and straps
- Lining fabric
- Mounting board
- Heavy-duty stapler and
staples
- Angle brackets, screws
Cutting directions:
The cut length of the swag is equal to the desired finished length at the straps plus 63.5cm. This allows for the pleats, seam allowance, and mounting. To determine the width of the fabric, add the desired width of the swag plus 2.5cm for the two seam allowances at the sides plus twice the width - or projection, of the mounting board above the window frame.
Cut the fabric and lining to this length and width.
For staps with a finished width of 3.8cm, cut two straps 10cm wide, with the cut length of the staps equal to twice the desired finished length plus 10cm - this allows for the mounting and the length taken up across the bottom edge.
Here's how:
1. Seam fabric widths. Place the outer fabric and lining right sides together and pin. Stitck a 1.3cm seam around the sides and lower edge - leaving the upper edge unstitched.
2. Clip lower corners. Press the lining seam allowance toward lining. Turn the swag right side out and press.
3. Determine desired placement for straps, 15 to 25cm from each end, depending on width of swag. Pin one end of each strap, right side up, to upper edge of swag at desired position.
4. Fold one strap piece in half lengthwise, right sides together and stitch 1.3cm seam on the long edge. Press seam open with tip of iron, taking care not to crease the fabric. Turn strap right side out, centering seam on back, and press. Repeat for second strap.
5. Wrap straps under bottom of swag and pin remaining end of each strap in place on lining side of swag - matching raw edges of straps to upper edge of swag.
6. Stitch outer fabric and lining together along the upper edge of swag, securing the straps in the stitching. Finish raw edges using zigzag or overlock stitch.
Mounting your Butterfly Swags
1. The swag is attached to a mounting board. Allow the board to project out from the window frame by 5 to 7 cm.
2. Install the mounting board at the top of the window frame, or just inside it, using angle brackets a little shorter that the width of the board.
3. Mark lines on top of the mounting board, 2.5cm from front and sides. Centre swag on board, with upper edge of the swag along the marked line. Staple into position and apply two staples at each strap.
4. Wrap sides of swag around end of the mounting board; staple in place on top of board, along marked line, forming a squared corner. Repeat for remaining side.
5. Secure angle brackets to the bottom of the mounting board, near ends and at 115cm intervals, using screws. Secure the angle brackets to the top of the window frame or to wall, using screws and plastic anchors.
6. Fanfold the lower 61cm of swag into five or six pleats, beginning by folding under the lower edge toward the lining.
Pull the pleats gently into swagged position at centre. Adjust folds as desired near straps.
