Awning Valance

Here's a 2-step project to make the pattern and sew up an awning valance.

This decorative window treatment can be used in any room in the home, but is especially popular in a traditional kitchen setting.

Making the pattern

1. Measure the length of the top rod or rail. On tracing paper, draw a line for the lower edge of awning equal to rod width plus 40cm.

2. Draw perpendicular line (a) at each end of lower edge, equal to desired length of awning; 38 cm length works well for most windows. Mark a line (b) across width of pattern, 10 cm above lower edge; this is the drop length.

3. Mark a dot (a) on marked line for the drop length, 20cm from each side; this marks the points of darts. Draw line (b) from marked dot diagonally to upper end of line for awning length; repeat for other side. Measure length of diagonal line.

4. Draw vertical lines (a) of same length as diagonal lines, starting at marked dots. Draw horizontal line (b) across top of valance; this should measure same distance as rod width. Add 1.2cm seam allowances on all sides.

5. Cut one awning piece from outer fabric and one from lining, piecing fabric widths as necessary. Transfer markings for dart points to wrong sides of the outer fabric and lining. Transfer line for drop length to the right side of lining.
