What paint can do...

Whilst some of the room makeovers shown below do involve a bit more that just paint, it's also pretty obvious the difference that a coat or two of paint can make. Take a look at some of the room makeovers below from Country Living to see what a difference paint and accessories can make to a boring room...

ABOVE and BELOW: Dingy beige rug and dated, dark furniture crammed into a narrow space indicated a much-needed update in this living space.

The makeover made sense of the narrow, alley-like space by dividing it into two areas: one furnished with a sectional sofa and the cosy conversation spot. Laid in a pattern of concentric squares, Marmoleum tiles help differentiate the two zones. This material is also far more practical than the old parquet and carpet.

LEFT and BELOW:

Drab colours and scant furnishings downplayed this family room.

After the makeover, the family room now has new window seats that function as storage for blankets and toys.

The ceiling beams are still a feature in the room by painting them in a slightly darker colour than the ceiling.

White slipcovered furniture is practical for a family room and keeps the small room from feeling cluttered.

RIGHT and BELOW:

Dated wallpaper and curtains accented this dining room. And the dark wood furniture only added to the drab feeling.

Trendy wallpaper and curtains dramatically changed the tune of this space in no time.

New, white painted dining chairs and side server fill up the room without making it feel overdone or claustrophobic.

If, like me, you are not a fan of wallpaper, there are plenty of other ways to add interest to walls.

LEFT and BELOW:

Simple touches can easily transform a bare-bones bedroom.

A headboard instantly adds interest to a boring bedroom, and you don't even have to make one. The headboard below is painted onto the wall behind the bed!

Complete the look with a mix of linens in graphic prints and cool tones.

Colour would turn this room from dreary to cheery.

The secret to this subtle yet super-stylish wall treatment? Extruded polystyrene ceiling medallions!

We installed the ones shown here in a single day using adhesive. A linen slipcover updates a standard sofa and delivers a soft dose of colour.
