You will need:
- Old sheets or drop cloths
- Old picture or mirror frame
- Mirror
- 120-grit and 180-grit sandpaper
- Rust-Oleum Specialty Metallic Gold paint
- Rust-Oleum Specialty Frosted Glass spray paint
- Stencil (or make your own!)
- Masking tape and Cling Wrap
- Spray-on adhesive
Here's how:
Remove glass from the old frame. Use brown paper to outline the shape of the removed glass and have a piece of mirror cut to the same size. You may want to take the frame along in case you need different fasteners for the new mirror.
Lightly sand wood frame. This will help the paint adhere better. Remove residue dust with a damp cloth.
Apply Specialty Metallic Gold paint to frame while following application tips and drying times on the can.
Clean mirror with glass cleaner and paper towels to remove any debris.
You may find a stencil you like at your local craft store, or if you’re feeling extra ambitious, purchase some thick board to create your own pattern. Draw a pattern on the board and cut out with a craft or Stanley knife. Place a piece of board underneath before cutting to protect your work surface.
Be creative with your stencil placement! Hold stencil in place on mirror with spray on adhesive and cover remainder of exposed mirror surface with plastic wrap.
Apply Specialty Frosted Glass paint over stencil pattern. Follow application tips and drying times on can. Repeat in all areas you wish the stencil to appear, each time surrounding stencil with clean plastic wrap.
Dip a cotton swab in lacquer thinner or acetone to remove excess frosted finish from mirror.
Place mirror in frame and hang it your entrance or living room for all to admire your handywork.
Rust-Oleum products are available at your local hardware store, or email Home-Dzine directly for details on a supplier in your area.
