Use paint to transform a home in so many different ways

Paint is not just for using on walls. There are so many ways that you can use paint to update your home - and furniture - and save money on replacing items by simply giving them a new look.

Here are some paint ideas to inspire you:

Attention to detail

Unique details on a dresser will stand out when you highlight them in a different colour paint. To do this, remove all the hardware before painting, then use a suitable primer for the base coat. Once the primer has dried completely, paint the entire surface with your chosen colour. Leave to dry overnight. Spray paint the knobs with Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch in a gloss white for a polished look.

Paint it black

There's a reason the little black dress has never gone out of style: It's elegant and goes with anything. So help your mismatched accessories to slip into something a little more comfortable: black!

A little Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch in a high gloss black goes a long way.

Make a room feel larger
Thick horizontal stripes can widen a small room - and choosing tonal colours creates a soothing impact. We used masking tape to create a thin white band between each stripe.

Check the level of your ceiling before starting - as they are rarely level - and to keep your stripes on the straight and level, work from the top down.

Less drab - more fab

Give a shabby bench a new look by painting it a cheery colour.

Prep the surface by removing old peeling paint or varnish, then sand it to a smooth finish.

Apply primer and then brush on glossy paint for extra pop and durability.

Time for a change

What's behind closed doors?

Go for an open-shelf look and remove cabinet doors, filling hinge holes with wood filler. Let dry and then sand down with 180-grit sandpaper.

Use a small foam roller to prime and then paint the interiors. If you're scared of making a mess, cover the edges of the cabinet with masking tape, and protect any shelves with newspaper.

Bookcase transformed
Create a luminous backdrop for books and knickknacks by painting the back of an ordinary bookcase with a coppery shimmer.

Clear out the shelves and protect shelves and edges with masking tape and newspaper, then spray on Rust-Oleum Metallic for a glimmering finish. Please do open windows and doors if spraying inside.
