Upcycled plastic bottle flowers

Use empty cold drink bottles to create a wonderful display of flowers. We used plastic eggs for this project, which will soon be available as Easter nears. Holes are drilled in the back of the egg and old silk flower stems hot-glued onto the back of the egg.

YOU WILL NEED:

Empty cold drink bottles
Plastic eggs
Plastic stems
Scissors
Craft paint
Artist's paintbrush
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks
Lit candle

JAN PINNEY

1. Wash the bottles to remove the stamped date and cut off the tops of each bottle.

2. Use sharp scissors to cut strips in each top - as wide as you would like the petals to be. You can experiment with thin and thick strips to see which you prefer, or to create a specific flower design.

3. Pierce a small hole into the back of each plastic egg with a large needle. Push the egg into the neck of the bottle. You can also add a small amount of hot glue on the inside of the neck to attach the egg.

4. Insert the tip of a plastic stem through the neck and into the hole you created in the back of the egg. Add some hot glue to stick in place

5. Place the bottle over a candle flame - anything else is too hot - and watch as the plastic peels back. Don't hold too close to the flame or the plastic will burn.
