Distressed furniture

This oak buffet was gathering dust in a garage before being restored to its original glory.

Freddie and Mariana Taylor live in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, with their two children. In 2008, Freddie spent a mere R500 overhauling this buffet.

"We wanted our kitchen and dining room to evoke a farmstyle feel, so I was planning on building such a cupboard from scratch - but when I was offered the buffet I saw the potential to convert it into what I needed," says Freddie.

HERE'S HOW:

"I simply removed the varnish, added the top section and closed up the back with knotty pine to give it a traditional look. We wanted a country-house feel, so after adding the top and back sections to the buffet, I painted it white and sanded it down to give it that rustic, weathered look."

His DIY experience:
"I found out that wood filler and a lick of paint can cover a multitude of mistakes, and I also learned that I can start and finish a project."

DIY TIP:
A show-stopping furniture piece is the ideal stage for other décor paraphernalia. Use it to show off beautiful collections, crockery and even a vase filled with fresh flowers.
