Creating the Perfect Bedroom

Bedroom décor depends on personal style - a room that is soothing, relaxing, and comfortable. Although no two bedrooms are alike, when it comes to decorating your room for the first or hundredth time, there are a few simple common guidelines.

As the main element of any bedroom, let’s talk about bedroom furniture.

Traditionally, bedroom sets consist of a bed frame or headboard, a chest of drawers, a bedside table or two and a wardrobe or vanity table. It's very common to see matching bedrooms sets made of the same type and colour of wood so that all pieces are uniform. One appeal of the matching bedroom set is usually the price. Many retailers, particularly warehouse and discount retailers, offer you a cost incentive to buy an entire matching bedroom suite. In other words, the cost of buying the entire suite as a package will end up costing you less than if you bought every piece in the suite separately. So the question then becomes "do I need all these pieces of furniture in my bedroom?" The answer to that question is of course determined by factors like how large a space your bedroom is, what kind of storage space you need and what kind of ambience you prefer.

Although the traditional choice is to go with matching elements in a bedroom suite, there is also something to be said for selecting bedroom furniture piece by piece.

This allows you to pick one large item (bed or chest of drawers) as a feature item and to select everything else to complement your focal piece and make it pop out, rather than showing everything as a uniform set. This can also be a nice way to add colour (bright or metallic bedside tables against neutral woods in the bed, for example).

No matter what bedroom furniture you decide on, remember always to measure the dimensions of your room before you buy. There are few things more frustrating than having new bedroom furniture delivered and finding it is too big for your space.

No bedroom would be complete without accessories such as linens, area rugs, curtains, decorative items and pictures for the walls. Decor accessories go above and beyond bedroom furniture, which can honestly only go so far in terms of representing a person’s individual style unless the furniture is custom-made, and can be used to combine a sense of flare and individuality in your choice - giving your bedroom a signature look.

One great idea for using accessories to display your style is a feature wall. Your feature wall will be a different colour than the rest of your room, and will typically be brighter or more intense: the colour would overwhelm if it filled the entire room, but as an accent wall, it’s perfect. You can fill this wall with wall decorative accessories such as paintings, prints, mounted decorative pieces and photographs. This really adds personality to the room. A few plants and candles never hurt either.
