More storage for children's bedrooms

The holidays may have come and gone, and have no doubt added to the already strained storage capacity for your child's bedroom. Shelves are overloaded, toy boxes filled to the brim and you can't seem to find storage space for new items.

Keeping a child's bedroom uncluttered and tidy teaches them organisational skills, so we look at a few storage solutions that not only look good, but provide plenty of storage without taking up valuable floor space.

Modular storage solutions, like the one shown above, allow you to add on individual units to build a storage centre that fits in a bedroom and suits your needs. The Design-A-Bed Playroom Storage is 30cm deep, and individual units are 80cm long. The design incorporates individual storage cubbies at the bottom that can added on to increase the total length, with cabinets and bookshelves placed on top. All the units are ordered separately, so you can choose your own design according to size and needs.

Replicating the pottery barn kids range (not available in SA), this modular storage unit from Design-A-Bed offers a similar storage arrangement as the previous unit, but with added storage. The cabinets are not as tall, allowing for an additional row of storage shelves on top.

Incorporate storage solutions that are easily accessible to your child. Storage cubbies and shelves allow a child to take out and put back the toys they want, promoting organisation skills to keep their bedroom neat and tidy.

Because all furniture is custom manufactured, paint colours and finishes can be requested to suit room decor. All Design-A-Bed.co.za furniture is manufactured locally using SupaWood and finished with non-toxic paints. Paint techniques can include distressed or glazed furniture, as well as faux bois (wood grain).

If you prefer to make your own furniture, your local Builders Warehouse offers a wide selection of timber and board that you can have cut to size.

Open shelves and storage drawers allow for display and hide-away storage. Cardboard boxes covered in wallpaper or fabric, and with a couple of handles attached, make for easy DIY storage containers for shelves or display units.

Recycling cardboard boxes into storage containers is a quick and easy project where you only need to spend money on fabric or wallpaper to cover the boxes. Use packaging tape to strengthen the seams and closures on your boxes, and add a couple of strips on the inside and outside of the box where the handles will be placed.

Use Bostik spray adhesive to attach the fabric or wallpaper to the inside and outside of the boxes, trimming the fabric to fit or leaving enough to wrap over the top. Use an awl or corkscrew to make holes in the sides of the boxes and use a hot glue gun to stick on screw cups for a decorative finish. Knot and thread through a piece of twine or rope for handles.

GOOD TO KNOW

For larger cardboard boxes that are stronger, you can also use epoxy adhesive to glue caster wheels onto the base to make the boxes mobile. Alternatively, for a sturdier design slip a piece of board inside the box and screw the casters into this.

Keep it simple with a basic storage unit and make up your own baskets, or buy ready-made baskets or storage containers. Select containers or fabrics to trim your baskets that work with the decor or theme of the bedroom. You can so easily vary fabric colours and patterns to create a stylish display that is eye-catching and practical.
