Add Warmth and Comfort to a Bedroom

We have previously featured how colours can warm up any room in a home, but sometimes colour alone is not enough to infuse warmth into a bedroom, especially one that lacks a few essential design elements and a touch of layering here and there.

Where walls and flooring are neutral in colour and you have opted for white or neutral bedding, a bedroom can feel stark and unwelcoming. Definitely not the place you want to spend in hibernation during the winter months.

If you like your current colour scheme and would prefer not to add colour to walls, then you need to look at adding texture, or layering up the space so that it feels more cosy.

It isn't always necessary to change a colour scheme to create an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming. Layering cushions on a bed, similar to what we discussed in our feature on Boutique style Bedrooms - adds a luxurious touch, especially if you splurge on plump cushions in thick fabrics and fluffy textures.

Even more texture can be introduced by adding a soft quilted bedspread that can be draped over the end of the bed when not in use.

If you haven't already got one, think about fitting an upholstered headboard to your bed. Not only will an upholstered headboard add interest and transform a plain bed into a feature, it will also add another element of texture into a bedroom.

Neutral carpets, although warm underfoot, do little to add a warm atmosphere. For the colder months, consider placing an area rug over top the existing carpet under your bed and bedside tables, or at the sides of the bed. You can choose a rug with a background colour that matches the colours already in the room, or one that introduces a single colour to the room and add a few accessories to tie the look together.

Simply by adding a few choice accessories here and there can make a big difference to how a bedroom looks and feels. A blank wall filled with interesting artwork visually fills the space and adds yet another element of design. If you don't want to introduce colour - look for images or sepia-toned prints.

Instantly add warmth by installing warm-white CFL or energy-saving globes to lamps and lights. The warm-white is not quite as bright as cool-white but definitely has the effect of adding warmth to a room setting. Layer lighting by adding table lamps or bedside lamps for cold evenings.

And last, but not least, consider adding curtains to windows if you don't already have. Blinds are perfect for summer but nothing says cosy more than curtains that can be closed to keep out the cold and add another layer of warmth.
