Gathered bed skirt

For a bed without a footboard, the cut width of the bed skirt is two to three times the distance around the sides and foot of the bed. The fabric may be cut so the lengthwise grain runs horizontally on the project.

Gathered bed skirts finish off a plain bed

Note: The cut length of the bed skirt is equal to the distance from the top of the base to the floor plus 5cm for hem and seam allowances, and for 1.3cm clearance at the floor.

For a split-corner gathered skirt for a bed with a footboard, the cut width for each of the two side sections is two to three times the length of the bed, and the cut width for the foot section is two to three times the width of the bed. The cut length of the sections is equal to the distance from the top of the base to the floor plus 5cm for hem and seam allowances, and for 1.3cm clearance at the floor.

Place the fitted sheet over the base. Using non-permanent marker, mark sheet along upper edge of base on each side and at foot of bed.

Stitch bed skirt together. For a bed without a footboard, stitch pieces in one continuous strip; for a bed with a footboard, stitch pieces in three sections. Finish seam allowances with zigzig. Press and stitch 2.5cm double-fold hems at sides and lower edge.

Zigzig over a cord at upper edge of skirt, within seam allowance, just beyond the seamline. For more control when adjusting gathers, zigzag over second cord 6mm from first row.

Lay skirt right side down on top of base; match markings and pin upper edge of skirt to fitted sheet, extending 1.3 seam allowance beyond marked line.

Pull on gathering cords, and gather skirt evenly to fit. Pin in place.

Remove bed skirt and fitted sheet from base. Stitch bed skirt to fitted sheet, stitching 1.3cm from raw edge; finish seam allowance.
