These homeowners wanted a 'designer look and feel' for their master bedroom, which was currently outdated and boring.
The pillows in the designer room are made from a variety of luxurious fabrics.
You can create duplicates by sewing together cotton and chenille scraps to replicate the look of
the bold stripe, and using ribbon to create the pattern for the smaller
stripe.
The designer bedroom has two styles of nightstands. The unfinished dressers were purchased at a discount price and finished with
mahogany stain and varnish. To mimic a designer look one nightstand was
given Chippendale-style hardware and the other traditional hardware
and decorative letters on the drawer fronts. The decorative letters were
purchased at a craft store, painted brass then attached to the drawer fronts with
adhesive.
Design Tip:
If antique furniture is out of your reach, consider putting older hardware on a
newer piece for an instant retro look. Look for period hardware at secondhand stores
or flea markets - it's a great way to dress up budget furniture.
At the end of the bed in the room the bench was
purchased at a chain furniture store. Three shades of silk fabric were
sewn together to imitate the stripes on the designer bench and stapled into place.
The main item in the bedroom, and the only really expensive piece, is
a beautiful sleigh bed in a mahogany veneer with a similar curved headboard.
The bedding in the bed room consists of cotton sheets
and an elegant cotton coverlette found at a
home decor store Always look for a highest thread count you can afford. A good rule of thumb
is 200 and over.
Lamps – Art deco-inspired lamps with great sterling bases add shine and elegance to the room.
Blue Vase – the top three-quarters of a raw ceramic vase was painted a
pretty robin's egg blue and a big glass jar found at a craft store and filled with exotic-looking
seashells. And don't forget the candles - added to both nightstands for a romantic touch.
If you want to recreate a designer look for your bedroom, browse through decor and home magazines. Once you've found something you like go window shopping. You'd be amazed at how easy it is to recreate a look with affordable accessories - not always a perfect match, but close enough!
