You will need:
Fabric
Timber (screws and brackets to assemble)
Acrylic paint
Silver paint
Furniture wax
Wood primer
120grit sandpaper
Screwdriver, saw
Here's how:
1. Use a sheer fabric for the actual drapery. You want to create a light, airy atmosphere and heavier fabrics will have the opposite effect.
2. Purchase softwood or 12mm MDF for the crown, available from builders merchants or hardware stores. Draw out a sketch with the dimensions. Make the crown yourself, or ask a professional to help. Nail additional pieces of wood into the four corners to provide a base for attaching to the ceiling.
3. Now for the fun part. Cover the crown with primer, then distress it to look old. We beat ours with a hammer and used a screwdriver to create dents and faux wormholes. Next, choose an acrylic paint that suits your fancy, and paint the crown with two coats. Once dry, sand in places, and rub with silver paint and furniture wax to complete the antique appearance.
4. The fabric was attached to the crown with a staple gun. You need one panel for the back and one for each side. Attach the crown to the ceiling using an electric screwdriver. To complete the look, we added large bolster pillows and swing-arm lamps.
