Closet storage solutions

For space saving solutions, wall-to-wall cupboards can save you a lot of space. Here's some more functional ideas for using wall-to-wall cupboards in your home:

To make more use of closet space, remove doors and add shelving

Idea 1: Create your own partitioning
Wall to wall cupboards can also be used as double-sided room dividers - between bedroom and bathroom for instance. If you want a door to link the two rooms, no problem, simply integrate it in the design. It is even possible to install a space saving sliding door as opposed to a hinged door.

Idea 2: Private dressing room
If the bedroom is very spacious it is possible to create your own u-shaped walk-in dressing room. A setup such as this provides a huge amount of storage space and ensures privacy when getting dressed.

Idea 3: Playful kids room
There isn't a room in the house that harbours more loose odds and ends than a child's bedroom: clothes, shoes, toys etc. A spacious wall of cupboards even though generally associated with the master bedroom can come in very handy in a child's room. It goes without saying that mirrors are not recommended from a safety point of view - colourful panels however work extremely well. How about painting one of the sliding doors with blackboard paint....

Idea 4: Multifunctional guest room
As with children and master bedroom, wall to wall cupboards can be very useful in the guestroom. A foldaway bed or wash basin can be integrated in the cupboard wall ensuring a spacious yet elegant entourage.

Different door-types
In essence there are tree different types of door mechanisms. A conventional door uses hinges and opens to the outside - perfectly user-friendly but not exceptionally elegant and requires space. Sliding doors require no floor space whatsoever, really look the part but overlap each other which might cause a certain amount of friction especially if there's two of you and you're in a hurry (in the morning). It is therefore important to rememberwhen designinga sliding door cupboard to make provision for at least 4 doors (two separate cupboards). Folding doors offer the advantage that the cupboard is readily accessible since the door can be folded open right to the side (in certain cases either side). They do require a little bit of turning space though and are not always perceived to be extremely aesthetically pleasing.

Behind the scenes
There are numerous factors that influence the quality of cupboards and other bedroom furniture. The most important quality determining factor however is the material used. The better brands will use nothing less than 16mm MDF of solid wood for the front panels while cheaper suppliers will compromise and use thinner as will as inferior material. The some holds true for hinges, rails, drawer mechanisms, etc. etc. In short: you mostly get what you pay for. Locks, hinges, rails etc.

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, these are vitally important parts, the quality of which can influence the expected lifespan of tour furniture. Needless to say better quality parts have a price tag to match. As a rule of thumb, doors higher than 120cm should have at least 3 adjustable hinges that can open 180 degrees or more. The all-important layout

The functionality of a wall-to-wall cupboard system is entirely dependent on the layout. In most cases the layout is determined by the customer based on his/her needs and requirements. For some lots of hanging space is an issue while others prefer folding their clothes in which case packing space is more important. Whim it comes to accessories there are options galore ranging from different types of drawers, wire baskets, washing baskets, slide-out shirt shelving, tie-racks, belt hanger, fold-down wardrobe lift (for storing two sets of clothes - one at the top and one at the bottom), shoe rack, built-in lighting and much more. The choice is yours - it's a matter of available space and money.

Installation and maintenance of luxurious built-in cupboards and wall to wall cupboards generally represent a sizeable investment, which is why it is important to have them installed by a specialist supplier - do not compromise and try to cut corners on the installation (most of the time the installation is part of the overall transaction).
