That cute, teddy bear wallpaper and pink furniture set was perfect when your child was growing up, but a bedroom makeover is on the cards if your child is turning into a teenager. It's not always a case of tossing out and buying new, careful planning and buying right at this stage will carry your teenager right through to when they leave home.

Choosing furniture

It isn't always necessary to buy new furniture for a teen bedroom, unless a bigger bed is required. Most teens prefer to give up the single and move into a three-quarter or double bed, if the room allows it. All you may need to add to the room is a chest of drawers, or a bed that has built-in storage.

Look for furniture design or have furniture manufactured that has clean lines and that will not age over time. Modular furniture is ideal for a teen bedroom. It is both functional and good to look at. Plus, with most modular furniture, you can add as and when you can afford it.

Seating is essential for teens, whether for chilling with friends or sitting back with a book. A small armchair, beanbag or couch will provide comfort and relaxation and can be designed to fit into even a small bedroom.

Decorate with colour

There's no better way to let a tween or teen take control of his space than putting them in charge of the palette, but be prepared to accept whatever crazy colour scheme they come up with. Instead of handing over control of the paintbrush, rather let them choose colourful accessories for their teen bedroom.

If you settle on a blank canvas for walls by painting them white or a light colour, shop around for curtains and soft accessories that add a splash of colour to the room. With today's acrylic paints you can even paint on fabric and let them design their own fabric accessories to match the decor.

Posters and art are a favourite way to add a personal touch. Instead of forking out on paint, consider using wall decals or posters. These can be easily removed when a change is needed.

Allow your teen to create their own personal space; they can hang up or display items that are special to them. This not only gives them an opportunity to be involved in the design process, but also express their creative side.
