This bedroom has some decent pieces of furniture; however, the ordinary colour scheme and lackluster character need a wake-up call. A botanical look with a dash of modern attitude instantly refreshes the room.
Canvas Classic
Make this beautiful headboard for less than R200. Stretch and staple canvas over a frame. Paint the canvas with a base coat of creamy colour; let dry. Then paint an easy design in green, such as these three large leafy branches. (If you don't like to paint freehand, trace a design onto the canvas first.) Tape off a border all the way around and paint the desired shade. For added comfort, layer batting inside the frame before you hang the frame behind the bed.
All dressed up
Brighten the room further by giving the existing dresser a makeover with ivory paint and new sparkling glass knobs. An antique oval mirror added above the dresser plays up the vintage look. A myrtle topiary in a green pot continues the botanical theme.
Glowing reviews
Bring in subtle, low-cost lighting, such as the pair of imitation alabaster lamps on the nightstands. For mood lighting, create a votive candleholder by gluing together nine glass holders, tying the grouping with braided jute ribbon, and adorning the square with a faux botanical sprig.
A touch of glass
Give the dresser top a touch of glass with a cluster of decanters gleaned from flea markets and thrift stores. Embellish the container tops with twine and fill with water and real branches.
Be seated
Establish a sitting area with a flea market daybed. Wrap the mattress in a few yards of oatmeal-colour muslin. Fill the back with fluffy pillows to shape an inviting spot for napping, snuggling, or reading.
Make the sitting area more personable with a collection of framed botanical prints above the daybed. Balance the arrangement by placing candle sconces on each side.
