Cool blue bedrooms

Blue is a calm, restful colour that evokes thoughts of cool, refreshing seas and vast cloudless skies. It's a colour that relaxes and refreshes a room, and it's the perfect colour for a bedroom that receives a lot of sunlight during the day.

I know it's not summer yet in fact, it's not even spring. But having recently done an article for summer and how hot it gets, it made me realise that one very affordable way to cool down a room, and particularly a bedroom, is to use shades of blue.

The blue in this bedroom, combined with the dark furniture, give an almost French Country feel to the room. The low, angled ceiling is painted in white to mirror the lightness of the carpet and give the room the illusion of more space.

In this bedroom washes of light sky blue on the walls and lots of white evoke the tranquility of a tropical breeze. The windows are draped by a muted shade of blue that picks up colour from the patterned rug. Coordinated accessories - Delft vase and plates, a blue upholstered chairs - plus patterned pillows and bedding enhance the balmy mood.

This robin's egg blue and ivory bedroom is light, cool and airy. The designer used various patterned and plain fabrics to add texture and detail to the room and that work together to create a look that is sophisticated and elegant.

By choosing aqua rather than a true blue, this bedroom is still calm, tranquil and cool. The headboard and matching bedding are shrouded in white, lightening the space without dominating. Being translucent, the curtains not only provide privacy in the bedroom, but add serene and softness .

This beautiful pale blue bedroom is peaceful and serene, but it also looks comfortable and lived in, even with an icy shade of blue that makes the room look very cool and fresh. The oversized brushed stainless steel bed is accented with pale blue pillows velvet , and the comforter is pure white with a pale blue trim. The pale, ice-blue walls are the perfect shade because it’s light enough to not take over the room, but it’s unmistakably blue.

A typical beach cottage bedroom. Blue brings a cool fresh feeling to the space, combined with liberal dashes of white in the ceiling and the blues are crisp and bold.

This fresh, cool bedroom is fairly light on the blue, but a little clearly went a long way. The designer used a pale blue patterned fabric to create a dramatic upholstered headboard that is mirrored in the cover on the base. Just a touch of green is added to the room as a contrast that really adds a pop of colour. This room is proof that you don’t need to fill a room with colour; a few smart, beautiful pieces are enough to create a great bedroom.

While darker walls tend to make spaces look smaller, the navy blue walls provide the perfect backdrop for a luxurious white tufted headboard. The contrast of light against dark is continued throughout the room; blue and white bedding, and dark blue drapes with grey damask pattern, complete the look.

When painting with a dark colour like navy blue, keep your bedding, carpeting, and decor light. Blue and white go together hand-in-hand. No matter what shade of blue your bedroom is, chances are that it could benefit from some white. White is extremely easy to incorporate into a room, and can be done using curtains, furniture or wall art.

If you decide the decorate your bedroom in shades of blue, the possibilities are endless. There are so many different shades of blue and so many different design styles.

The carpet in this more traditional bedroom is the main design element, and around which the rest of the room was decorated. Elegant pieces, such as the tufting and upholstery on the headboard, chair, and ottoman lend a romantic touch, while a simple blue and white quilt with coordinating pillows adorn the bed.
