Making Room for Beds in Small Spaces

When you're living in a small house with a growing family, finding extra room for bedrooms can be difficult since not everyone has the budget to add on, and you might not want to sell up and move to a larger place.

When you need to find the space for an extra bed in a shared bedroom you need to put your thinking cap on, especially in you can't afford to add on or move out. But you're not alone... there are many who have gone through the same experience and some truly great ideas that you can consider for your own home. Here are some clever and practical ideas I have come across for fitting beds into small spaces.

A space at the top of the stairs becomes a bedroom for two. Wall-mounted bunk beds take up very little space.

Growing up in England in what was known as a '2 up - 2 down' I well remember the time when my younger brother was moved out of my parent's bedroom and into mine. Even though the shared bedroom was teeny-tiny, my parents managed to squeeze a bed into an alcove at the side of the fireplace. To this day I will make use of any space in my home - no matter what the size!

In a small home you use every available bit of space there is. The area under the stairs is normally bricked in and wasted, but I love this idea for turning it into a little hidey-hole that can serve as a sleep are when kids stay over.

In the space normally reserved for a small walk-in closet, these clever parents slipped in a bedroom.

An alcove that would normally be fitted with built-in cupboards is turned into a wonderful sleeping area with a large bed and tons of storage.

Hard to believe this small room offers sleeping space for three small children. A cushioned window seat provides a sunny spot for the children to sit and read.

Bunk beds are ideal space savers and while fitting 3 or more beds into a space would be difficult, with a little imagination and DIY savvy you can quite easily design a layout that is practical.

A loft bed is fitted inside custom built-in cupboards and can be hidden away behind closed doors. Under the bed is plenty of storage for blankets and linens.
