Storage ideas

If you are anything like me, you are always on the lookout for new ways to store more. I absolutely hate to throw things away, and the other day I actually discovered a whole pile of Valeur makeup that I purchased in 1996 that has never been used! I decided to search out some new and unique ways to store more...

An open and closed affair

TOP RIGHT: A mix of open and closed bathroom storage makes built-in cabinetry more interesting and versatile. With trim styling and a mix of glass-front cabinets and colourful cubbyholes, this bathroom built-in has an open, airy feel. Hidden hinges enhance the slick design. This is an easy task as a do-it-yourself project, as the built-in is made up of individual blocks that are then screwed together. Use safety glass for the door fronts, and finish off with Rust-Oleum Frosted Glass.

Junk shop finds for all your junk

An old medical-supply cabinet, repaired and repainted, holds towels and soaps in this bathroom. The storage cabinet even has display space on its top surface. Look for pieces like this at secondhand shops and salvage yards. With a little sanding and a fresh coat of paint, they offer bathroom storage with character.

Build storage under the bathtub

Now here's a new idea that I haven't come across before! A large bathtub, especially an oval or round fitted tub, often has plenty of wasted space around the edges. Work with a carpenter to build tilt-out drawers in the tub and put that space to good use.

Mix it up

BOTTOM RIGHT: Not everything has to match. In this modern bathroom a tall, narrow dresser fits perfectly into a niche between the shower and wallmount toilet. Reminiscent of Asian tea chests, the slim, espresso-brown piece stands in for a medicine chest in this sleek bathroom.

Out of sight

When you run out of room, the back of the bathroom door is full of unused storage space. Paint the door with Rust-Oleum magnetic paint to create an attractive surface on which to hang small items. Alternatively, use plastic suction fittings.

Another easy storage solutions is to stick self-adhesive hooks to the inside of your medicine cabinet doors. Use these for scissors, scrunchies and other small accessories to make them easier to find.
