Can I paint my shower?

When it works out too expensive to rip out and replace tiles in a bathroom or kitchen, painting tiles is a solution. But does it last?

Tile trends come and go, and what was trendy 10 years ago can look awful today. But ripping out and replacing dated tiles is an expensive exercise, so what can you do to remedy a bathroom or kitchen with ugly tiles?

One affordable solution is to paint tiles with Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Kit. This epoxy paint kit is available at your local Builders store and offers an easy way to cover up ugly tiles. Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Kit is available in a can or in an aerosol spray. You can even purchase a Touch-Up Kit for when you need to do small repairs and touch-ups.

A query that I regularly receive is the durability of painted tiles.

The product used to paint over tiles is an excellent one, BUT it has to be applied properly. If you don't do the correct preparation, and you don't apply the product in accordance with the instructions, you only have yourself to blame if the finish doesn't last.

Let's look at how to apply Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Kit:

1. Remove all the old silicone sealer around baths and sinks and clean up.

2. The surfaces need to be clean and dry - very clean.

  • - Use white spirit vinegar and water to treat and remove mildew or mould

  • - Scrub the grout lines with an ammonia-based cleaner and soft scrubbing brush

3. Lightly sand tiles with 400-grit sandpaper and wipe clean.

4. Tape off necessary areas with painter's tape.

5. Mix the 2-part product according to the instructions.

You will find a detailed video here on the proper application method and the tools and materials required.

Do painted tiles last?

Bearing in mind that painting tiles is not a permanent solution, you can expect painted tiles to look good for a couple of years - giving you breathing room to save up for a bathroom or kitchen renovation.

After 1 year, the only area that needs touching up is along the base of the tiles where silicone sealer can be re-applied.
