Add mirror panel to bathroom door

Adding a mirror panel to your bathroom door not only visually enlarges the space, it also reflects light and adds a decorative effect. Here's how to add a mirror to a door and finish with decorative trim.

Use pine moulding and trim around and on top of the mirror to create a decorative effect that resembles a glass door. Instead of fitting a large mirror, it is easier to have two smaller mirror panels cut to fit the door. Easy to handle and easier to fit.

YOU WILL NEED:

2 of 4mm x 600 x 900mm mirrors - any glass/mirror supplier will cut to size for you

4 of pine moulding - find a varied selection at your local Builders Warehouse

No More Nails adhesive

Mitre box and backsaw

Tape measure and pencil

HERE'S HOW:

Preparation

For this project you will need to remove the door from its hinges and set down on a couple of workbenches. You will finish the project in a day, so the door will be back in place without too much inconvenience!

1. Measure and mark to determine where the mirrors will be placed. Space the two mirror panels close together. The join will be covered by the trim added later. Around the inside of this mark apply No More Nails adhesive and carefully set each mirror in place. Leave the adhesive to set for a couple of hours.

2. While the adhesive sets, and without disturbing the mirrors, you can measure up for the lengths required to frame the mirrors around the outside. These need to be cut with a mitre box or mitre saw with 45-degree corners. You also use No More Nails adhesive to attach the mouldings around the glass panels.

3. Cut all your trim to size for mounting directly onto the mirror. It helps to have a couple of scrap blocks of timber or board handy as spacers. Use No More Nails adhesive to mount the trim onto the mirror.

The attractive arrangement of wood strips gives this door a great look. Plus, the mirror is still practical to use since the strips don’t interrupt too much of the reflection.
