Double Duty

Learn how to use cabinetry and decor to create a stylish space for a home office as well as a guest bedroom.

This 4 x 3.5 metre home office (the size of a typical bedroom) is so well planned it even has space for a bed. The success lies in highly organized cabinetry that allows the worker to tuck everything away at day's end while providing two guests a place to sleep, stow belongings, and relax.

Cabinet Organization
A generous length of maple and cherry cabinetry provides enough space for a desk, counter space for collating proposals, and two armoires that hide equipment. A design note: Include a variety of cabinet heights and depths on a long storage wall to make a home office feel less corporate.

Desk and Dressing Table
Base cabinets on each side of this desk reflect its owner's preferences: an open box for oversize books on the left, cubbies for rolled-up plans on the right. As a bonus, the desk can stand in as a dressing table for guests.

Message Centre
Mounted beneath the upper cabinet to the right side is a pull-down message centre with a tackboard and compartments for pens, clips, and notepaper. This type of organizer first showed up in the kitchen as spice and knife racks, keeping clutter off the work surface and boosting storage capacity.

Media Centre
To the left of the desk, an armoire hides a computer, printer, stereo, office supplies, and files. The semi-custom unit came with the roll-out keyboard tray, adjustable shelves, and a file drawer. Pocket doors slide back into the armoire, keeping its profile as slim as possible and leaving more room for traffic.

Guest Room Storage
Wide drawers help make the guest room more hospitable by offering space for storing clothes as well as extra bedding or towels.

Daybed and More
Opposite the work station, a comfy chair, ottoman, and daybed offer space for a brainstorming session, or comfy overnight arrangements for a guest. Glass-front units flanking the daybed were designed as upper cabinets, but work well at ground level with a toe-kick added. The long side of one of the glass-front cabinets opens to reveal deep shelves slipped behind the shallow display shelves, so no unclaimed space goes to waste.

Trundle Bed
Hidden behind the daybed skirts, a trundle bed efficiently provides extra sleeping space for a second guest

Remember, it's your guest room as well as a home office, and you don't have to live with a neutrals-only corporate colour scheme. Choose inspiring, feel-good colours to camouflage a hardworking nature. This colour scheme began with a vintage-pattern bark cloth fabric that coordinates well with celadon green and coral - celebrating a love of the tropics.
